.KEY MESSAGES...

* There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons south of Interstate 80.
* Breezy afternoon winds return Wednesday through Friday, posing

.DISCUSSION...
High pressure will maintain hot conditions through Wednesday with
daytime highs in the upper 80s-90s for Sierra locales and upper 90s
to 103F in lower valley communities of NE California and W
Nevada. Nighttime lows through Wednesday will only fall to the
upper 60s to 70F in western Nevada valleys, providing minimal
relief from the heat at night. As a result, moderate (2 out of 4
levels) HeatRisk will be persist through Wednesday for most areas
with a major (3 out of 4 levels) HeatRisk in lower valleys of W
Nevada -- including Reno/Sparks. Be sure to stay hydrated and
limit time in the heat!
Much of this week is favored to be dry, but odds of showers and
thunderstorms do increase Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. The Mono-
Alpine-Mineral County vicinity will have the best chances
(20-30%) of storms each afternoon with lesser odds (10-20%)
extending north towards the I-80 corridor. Showers and
thunderstorms will likely remain confined to the Sierra and Sierra
Front on Tuesday before spreading eastward on Wednesday. Strong
outflow winds will be the main concern, but brief downpours, small
hail, and occasional lightning will also accompany thunderstorms.
Low pressure will mature across the western states around midweek,
displacing the high pressure east of the region. Temperatures will
cool after Wednesday in response, returning to seasonal averages by
the weekend. It`ll stay hot throughout the week, just more
seasonably so towards the end of the week and weekend. Breezy
afternoon winds also return Wednesday through Friday, which will
likely elevate fire concerns and possibly impact recreation and
aviation interests. Stronger low pressure is favored over the
weekend, which will keep temperatures mild for August but also may
pose additional impacts to fire, recreation, and aviation.

.AVIATION...
Widespread VFR conditions and light breezes prevail today. Triple
digit heat may pose density altitude issues for W Nevada terminals
today and Tuesday. Thunderstorm chances increase Tuesday and
Wednesday with greatest likelihood of storm impacts at KMMH
(15-25%) and, to a lesser extent, KCXP-KMEV (10-15%).
